US President Joe Biden said yesterday Sunday that he had pardoned his son Hunter Biden, who was convicted of making false statements in the purchase of weapons and illegal possession of firearms and pleaded guilty in a federal tax evasion case.
Biden added in a statement released by the White House: “Today I signed a pardon for my son, Hunter, from the day I took office I said I would not interfere in the decision-making process of the Ministry of Justice and that I would not intervene in the decision-making process of the Ministry of Justice. I kept my promise even though I saw my son being selectively and unfairly prosecuted.
The White House has repeatedly confirmed that Biden will not pardon or commute the sentences handed down to his son, who is recovering from drug addiction and has become a target for Republicans, including President-elect Donald Trump.
Biden said, “No reasonable person looking at the facts about Hunter can come to any conclusion other than that Hunter was targeted solely because he is my son,” adding, “I hope the American people understand why a father and a president made this decision. “.
At a hearing in Los Angeles federal court last September, Hunter (54) claimed responsibility for the charges against him, opening the door to a sentence of up to 17 years in prison, in addition to a fine of up to reach a million dollars.
The court set the sentencing hearing for December 16, where the judge will make his final decision.
