Manchester United’s results have not improved under new Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim, who has made the worst start for a manager in the club’s history in over a century.
Since taking charge of Manchester United last November, succeeding Dutchman Eric Ten Hag, Amorim has led the team in 11 matches in all tournaments, winning only 4, losing 6 and drawing zero one.
In its last match, last Monday, United lost at home against Newcastle United (0-2) on the 19th day of the English Premier League, causing the team to suffer its ninth defeat in the local championship.

This is the team’s fifth defeat in 8 Premier League matches under the leadership of Amorim, who recorded the worst start for a manager in the history of the “Red Devils” in 103 years, according to the newspaper British “Daily Mail”.
The newspaper explains: “So far, Manchester United players have not agreed with Amorim’s 3-4-3 style of play”, in reference to the team’s struggles with the Portuguese.
After losing to the McBayes, the red team finished the previous year with the lowest point total since 1989 (51 points) and suffered 3 consecutive home defeats for the first time since 1979.
Manchester United lost 6 matches during the month of December 2024 in all tournaments, the highest number of defeats in a month since September 1930.
During the eight matches of the English Premier League, Man United achieved negative figures in several aspects:
- He has scored 9 goals, which is the fourth worst goal average in the Premier League since November 22, and only 4 teams have scored fewer than him.
- The players’ shooting rate reached 9.18%, placing them in 14th place among the teams in the competition.
- The players made 4 unforced errors which resulted in goals conceded.
- If the championship had started since Amorim took over, the team would have been in 17th place with 7 points, one point away from relegation.
- The team conceded 18 goals in December, the most goals conceded in a month since March 1964.
The Daily Mail believes that these crises actually preceded Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford and that most of the blame lies on the shoulders of Ten Hag and chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but the Portuguese coach has become linked to this “terrible chaos”.
Amorim fears relegation
Despite this, Amorim admitted that the team’s situation with him was not good, saying: “We haven’t improved and it’s my fault. It’s embarrassing to be the manager of Manchester United and losing a lot of matches, but we have to handle the difficult times.
Amorim admitted that the issue of relegation had become a real threat for the team, which holds the record for the number of times crowned in the English Premier League (20 times), and the “Red Devils” are currently only at 7 points from the relegation places.

The Portuguese coach continued: “It’s very clear, so we have to fight. It’s a difficult moment, one of the most difficult moments in Manchester United’s history, and we have to deal with it honestly. “
Amorim (39) continued: “I’m an official. I don’t like coming here and making excuses. I think people are tired of excuses at this club. Our club needs a shock and we “We have to understand it. It’s a very difficult moment and we have to fight for the next match.”
