Yesterday, the prosecution of Mauritania asked for a 20 -year sentence for former president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who has been tried since last November before a court of appeal to Nouakchott for having used the power to perceive a huge wealth.
The prosecutor of the Court of Appeal, judge Sidi Mohamed Ould Eddi Ould Moulay, accused the former president of exploiting his position to achieve personal interests.
The prosecutor said that the former president “transforms the presidency into a brokerage office and blackmail investors”, stressing that the accused is involved in cases of generalized financial corruption.
It should be noted that there Abdel Aziz, who ruled Mauritania from 2008 to 2019, has been in detention since the start of its first trial in January 2023, and the first degree of dispute ended to condemn it to 5 years of Prison in December 2023 after being sentenced for two lavish crimes and illegal enrichment funds.
Exploitation of positions and influence
However, the prosecutor asked the court yesterday, Monday, to impose a 20 -year sentence against Oul Abdel Aziz and 10 years in prison for a certain number of former ministers accused of him in this case.
The prosecutor also asked for the dissolution of the “Charitable Mercy Society”, which was created and chaired by the son of the late President, Ahmed Ould Abdel Aziz, and the confiscation of his money.
Ould Abdel Aziz was represented by the Court, as well as around 10 other defendants, who are old and close to him, including former prime ministers, former ministers and two large companies.
All are judged for “illegal enrichment”, “exploitation of the position”, “exploitation of influence” and “money laundering”, knowing that Abdel Aziz constantly denies all the accusations against him.
