Security Council discusses Israeli attack on Iran news

The UN Security Council began a meeting on Monday evening to discuss the repercussions of the Israeli attack on Iran, after the latter presented a formal request for an emergency meeting, supported by the Algeria, China and Russia.

The ambassadors of these countries to the United Nations spoke at the meeting, and the most notable statements were:

Algeria

Algeria’s representative to the Security Council, Ammar Benjameh, said that Israeli attacks against Iran constitute a violation of international peace and that Israel must be held responsible for its actions.

He added that true peace requires everyone’s respect for the principles of the United Nations and international law, calling on all members of the Security Council to impose an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon.

China

For his part, the Chinese representative said that the situation in the Middle East is fragile and that all parties must implement a ceasefire, stressing that his country opposes any aggressive action that threatens peace and regional security.

He added that the ceasefire in Gaza is still not respected and that Security Council resolutions have been ignored.

Russia

Separately, Russia’s representative to the Security Council, Vasily Nebenzia, said that Israel had not hidden its intention to strike Iran in recent weeks and had repeatedly struck cities in Syria and Syria. Lebanon and committed political assassinations.

He expressed concern over the growing escalation between Israel and Iran, as well as Israel’s neglect of the US-backed international community.

He added that Israel’s hostile actions aim to fan the flames of war and must be stopped.

For her part, the American representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, declared that her country had not participated in the Israeli strikes against Iran, stressing that the United States would help Israel to defend itself.

She added that Israel had carried out airstrikes outside residential areas in Iran, calling on Iran to stop its attacks against Israel.

Iran

In turn, Iranian delegate to the Security Council, Amir Saeed Irani, said that Israeli aggression against Iran represents a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter and is part of a broader approach practiced by Israel in all impunity.

He added that the unqualified support of the United States has emboldened Israel to continue its crimes in violation of international law, which poses a threat to international peace and security.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi sent a letter to the Security Council on Saturday, calling for an urgent meeting to condemn recent Israeli strikes against Iran, warning that “Israeli actions represent a serious threat to peace and international security and increase destabilization in the Middle East. region.”
