The UNHCR said that the growing number of refugees fleeing the conflict in the east of the Democratic Congo in Burundi puts “enormous pressure on rescue agencies that are fighting to respond to the aggravation of the crisis in the middle of the scarcity of resources”.
On Friday, the commission added – in a statement – that more than 71,000 people have gone through Burundi since the start of this year to escape burning violence in eastern Congo.
She added that more than 12,000 refugees had been transferred to the Moussini site, while others reside with reception communities in border areas.
The United Nations Commission for Refugees said that the location of Mounsini near the border between the two countries is known to be overcrowded, because it welcomes around 16,000 people, although it is designed to receive only 3 thousand.
The UNHCR emergency director said the food classes had been halved, warning that it would be imposed by the end of June if additional funding is not guaranteed.
The UN official explained that the humanitarian crisis is not limited to food, as rainwater was flooded with emergency tents installed in low agricultural land, and this threatens to increase the spread of diseases, indicating that schools, clinics and sanitation systems exist or completely collapse.
Since last January, eastern democratic regions have experienced violent mutual attacks between rebels and government forces, which has killed more than 7,000 civilians, and tens of thousands of their homes have been moved.
The United Nations claim that humanitarian conditions have become worrying and that international rescue organizations can reach places due to fighting.
