The funeral of Abdellatif Akhrif, player of Ittihad Tangier, competing in the Moroccan championship, took place this Friday evening, after his body was received by the Algerian authorities earlier Friday.
Earlier on Friday, Algerian authorities returned Akhraif’s body, which was swept to its shores by waves of the Mediterranean Sea last summer after he drowned during a tourist trip.
The Tangier Union published a statement on its Facebook page: “In accordance with the wishes of the family of the deceased Abdel Latif Akhrif, funeral prayers will take place for his soul, his body will be preserved and burial will take place in Bir Shefa. neighborhood cemetery this Friday evening. We ask God to grant the deceased His mercy and grant his family patience and comfort in their loss.
Akhrif (24) disappeared at sea with two Moroccan players last July after strong currents swept away their small yacht.
The three players were part of a group of five club players on a sea trip off the northern city of Tangier when strong currents and strong winds swept away their yacht while they were swimming in deep waters.
Players did not have buoys when jumping from the small yacht to swim in the sea.
Ittihad Tanger has been playing in the professional championship since 2015, and won the championship title for the first and only time in its history during the 2017-2018 season.
The team currently ranks 11th in the championship with 15 points from 13 matches.
