Tuesday, the Qatari capital, Doha, attended a triple meeting between the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the presidents of Rwanda Paul Kagame and the Democratic Congo Felix Cheskidi, in the context of the efforts made to calm the situation in the Democratic Republic of the east of the Congo.
These are the first direct talks that brought together African presidents since the rebels on March 23 intensified their campaign in the east of Congo last January, when they seized two main cities in the area rich in minerals.
According to the Qatar news agency, the leaders of the countries combined in Doha welcomed the progress made in the operations of Luanda and Nairobi, as well as the spouse of the Eastern African group and the development group for southern Africa, which was held in Dar Al Salam in Tanzania, on February 8.
The leaders of the countries confirmed the commitment of all the parties to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, as agreed at the mentioned summit.
The leaders of the countries have agreed to the need for continuous discussions that have started in Doha to build solid foundations in order to achieve lasting peace, as shown in the operations of Luanda and Nairobi, which have been merged.
According to a joint declaration, the presidents of Rwanda and Congo expressed their thanks to the state of Qatar and its emir for organizing this fruitful meeting which helped to strengthen confidence between the two countries, and confirmed the joint commitment to a safe and stable future of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the region.
