The United Nations Support Mission in Libya “Oncelil” announced today, on Tuesday, the training of a consulting committee whose mission is to help keep the desired presidential and parliamentary elections, resolving the differences to this regard between political parties.
The training of this committee, made up of Libyan experts, is part of a political initiative announced by “OnSel” during a briefing before the Security Council on December 16, 2024.
And “Oncelil”, in a statement today, said that “the task of the Advisory Committee is to submit appropriate and political proposals applicable to solve exceptional disputed problems, which helps keep the elections”.
She stressed that these proposals will be based on legal references, including the Libyan political agreement signed in the Moroccan city of Skhirat in 2015, and the roadmap of the Libyan political dialogue forum, which was approved in the city of Geneva in 2021, in addition to the laws of (6 + 6) electoral committee.
On June 6, 2023, the committee (6 + 6), which was published on June 6, 2023, during discussions in the Moroccan city of Bouznika, the electoral laws, but some of the provisions of these laws were confronted with the opposition of Libyan political parties.
Meetings
Oseelel reported that the members of the Committee have been chosen according to criteria which include professionalism and experience in legal and constitutional questions and elections, with the ability to carry out political compatibility and understand the political challenges to which Libya is confronted.
She stressed that the committee is not a committee to make decisions or a meeting place for dialogue, but rather works in a specific time ceiling (which it did not clarify), and it is planned that His functions will be performed in a short period of time.
The Committee will provide the results of its work to the United Nations Mission, which will in turn facilitate communication with the Libyan institutions concerned to follow the political process.
The mission announced that the Committee will hold its first meeting next week in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
This stage is involved in efforts to open the way to the elections that seek to resolve the conflict crisis between two competing governments in Libya. west of the country.
The second is the government accused of the House of Representatives led by Osama Hammad, based in the city of Benghazi, and controls the east of the country and most of the southern regions.
The Libyans hope that the next elections will help end the political and armed conflict, and put an end to the transition periods that the country has experienced since the overthrow of the Muammar Gaddafi regime in 2011.
